Millions of people are deprived of basic health services, education and protection because they were born into poverty or because of their ethnicity, religion or race. COVID-19 has widened this inequality gap and the social, economic and health effects of the pandemic will threaten child rights for years to come. A virus has brought the world's largest economy, the most powerful country, to its knees. Hospitals were overcrowded, morgues sprang up and doctors and nurses scrambled for protective personal equipment (PPE) as if it were a third world country.
